Coca-Cola BlaK

Like most other bits of pop culture, Coca-Cola BlaK arrived in late in Edmonton. Exactly how late, I’m not entirely sure. All I know is that, until last night, I had never seen a bottle of the stuff. Naturally, having noticed a few bottles sitting in a cooler at the video store, I couldn’t resist sampling the coffee-cola. I removed one of the chilled, glass blottles from the cooler and placed it on the counter alongside the video that Ashley and I where renting (The Sentinel).

Upon arriving home, we tossed the bag on the counter, putzed about for an hour or two, and finally decided to pop the movie into the ol’ DVD player. By this point, the Coke BlaK had warmed up enough that I didn’t want to attempt it. I tossed into the freezer and, after about a half hour, I decided to check on it. By now, it was nice and cold again, so I twisted the the cap off and took my first sip.

It was smooth. Surprisingly smooth, actually. I had expected two things from this drink. The first was that it would taste horrible. The second was that it would be, like regular Coke, fairly metallic and not particularly smooth. I was wrong on both counts. Not only is Coke BlaK surprisingly smooth, it tastes really good. The blend of cola and coffee reminded me of various other coffee-flavoured foods: coffee cake, Coffee Crisp, etc.

While I don’t want fall into the marketing trap, Coke BlaK did taste somehow more “grown-up,” more “sophisticated” than regular coke. It’s not a drink that you guzzle back while eating cheezies and playing videogames. It’s more of an afternoon pick-me-up for a long day at the office; or something to drink on a hot summer’s day, when you’re craving a coffee, but need something cold to drink.

It’s also not a drink that you gulp back in a couple of long, drawn-out slurps. Like coffee, it’s more of a sipping beverage, to be enjoyed over a longer period that typical can of Coke. At 237 mL, the bottle is smaller than a standard pop can, but it doesn’t feel like it’s too little when you’re drinking it. In fact, a larger size might be too much. Despite being an enjoyable drink, Coca-Cola BlaK is one of those flavours that can only be done in moderation. Too much, and you start to hate the thing that you loved just moments earlier.

The verdict, then, is that Coca-Cola BlaK is smooth and tasty. But, it’s not a flavour that one can have too often. It’s something that I’d buy myself as a “treat” from time to time, but it’s certainly not going to become a regular fixture in my fridge. Once in a while, though, I’ll indulge myself, and take sometime out for a cool, coffee-cola.

I for one did not enjoy Blak. I tried it today, actually, but had seen it in BC. I don’t like drinking beverages and being able to taste the aspertame.

I didn’t really notice the aspartame taste, which I tend to notice a lot when I’m drinking diet cola.

I, on the other hand, didn’t mind Blak, but found it could have used more aspertame, say more on par with Coke 2, Coke 3, or the upcoming Coke 4: Aspertame’s Revenge!, which I got a sample of in the mail.

I don’t usually act all litigious and stuff; but I’m really wondering how they can be so careless as to not have check with me first — you know, they didn’t even offer me a free case of the stuff. -Dan Oblak

Without even asking permission, Coke tries to capitalize on my good name…
