Art Party in an Uber Cool Urban Loft

Last night, I attended a party for blood ink journal. The party was held in one of the editors’ ultra cool downtown loft. The party was a blast. Good words spoken on the microphone, and some pretty incredible art hanging on the walls. I secretly hope that the owner keeps her condo decorated that way all the time, and that it wasn’t setup specifically for the art show (even though I’m sure that it was).
Hanging out in a beautiful loft of the sort typically only seen in movies about rich New Yorkers, the conversation inevitably moved to the topics of design and real estate. The talk about real estate simply reminded me of the near impossibility of owning a home in this city on my current salary. The talk of design, however, was fascinating. It also led me to make an Ikea run this afternoon (after first checking ikea hacker for ideas).
Of course, Ikea managed to make me spend money on a lot of things, none of which was a bookshelf (something I actually need). There were actually a few really cool things I was tempted to pick up, but I figured that, since I’m still renting, it’s probably best not to mount a bunch of stuff to the walls.
Buying a home is, of course, on my mind again after last night. As unlikely as it is that I’ll be able to afford something anytime soon, I’ve been looking–houses mostly; as cool as it would be to live in a nice loft, I really would prefer to have a backyard. Besides, a loft like the one I saw last night, in todays market, is probably worth between $350-400K. For that money, I think I’d prefer the extra space that would come with buying an actual house, instead of a condo.
