Bad Habits and Hypocracy

I have come to the realization that I have a bad habit. I have a bad habit that I can’t stand in other people. I hate when people read over my shoulder, especially when I’m on the computer. With increasing frequency, however, I find myself doing the very same thing to other people.

I catch myself reading my co-workers’ emails as I pass by their desks. I will try and see what my brother is doing when I visit my family. (In my defense, he spends most of his waking hours on the computer, so checking on what he’s doing is one way of getting to know him better.)

What does one do when they find that they are becoming the very thing that they despise?

There’s an old theory that claims, “all love is self love.” We love in others what we love in ourselves. Ergo, we despise in others what we despise in ourselves. Don’t know if that’s 100% true all the time, or if it’s a self-fulfilling kind of idea, but it makes sense to a degree.
