Gimme That Christian Side-Hug

I’m sure that a lot of you have seen this already. It made the viral rounds last week, but I’m coming up short on content ideas and I still find this amusing a week later, so I thought I’d share it anyway.

To help spark conversation in the comments, here are a few points about what’s wrong with this video/song:

  • White guys who are very, very likely to be middle class are pretending to be “gangsta.” Normally, I find this funny (because it’s so lame). In this case, it kind of bothers me and comes across as unintentionally racist.
  • Why are their gunshots and sirens in a Christian rap song? (Perhaps because they stole the beat.)
  • What kind of weirdo sexualizes a hug to the point that it’s deemed inappropriate for anyone who isn’t married? And, do they think that it’s gay for two guys to “front-hug?”
  • They clearly do not know what “rough rider” means.
  • I suspect that Jesus did hug “like that” (i.e.: he front-hugged people).

Man, that is beyond lame. “Christian” and “Rap” don’t belong in the same sentence. I lasted until the 2 minute mark before stopping the pain.

It is painful. What’s worse is that the chorus–”Gimme that Christian side-hug”—is really, really catchy. I had it stuck in my head for at least 2 days after I saw the video…and that was after only a single viewing. It may have been the most annoying earworm ever.

The Christian Side Hug rap was a total Joke and spoof….but it should have came with some sort of disclaimer. Since the end result was basically making Christianity and look stupid.

If it is, in fact, a spoof, then it wasn’t clear. Taken out of context, all I know is that this was performed at a Christian youth conference, and that there is no hint of humour in the song; there’s a crap-load of unintentional humour, sure, but there is no hint of intentional humour in the song/video.

Satire is usually more obvious than “The Christian Side-Hug” rap was, so I guess you’re right: it should have come with a disclaimer. (But, if it needs a disclaimer, does that mean that it failed in it’s supposed intention?)
