Yeah, I suppose I'm not really surprised either (aside from the BP one, but if it's plastered all over the place in the US then I guess I shouldn't be). I'm more concerned than I am surprised. If a child that young has already been trained to recognize logos outside of the realm of food/junk food, where grandpa works, and "gas," well, it seems like we're doing something wrong as a society. The marketers and brand managers are sure doing something right, though.

I'm not the least bit surprised that a 5-year-old can recognize logos. We're all bombarded with branding all day, every day. Even though we had no TV and led a low-key, light consumer kind of lifestyle when she was wee, my daughter probably could have rattled off a few of those too. And, yeah. the BP logo/brand is as common in the U.S. as Esso or Shell is here.

Sounds good, but it would probably get soggy between the time I make it and the time I actually eat it on my lunch break.

It's a funny thought, but I don't think that responding to sexual aggression with further sexual aggression (and mockery) is really the smartest course of action.

I would just point at his penis and show how little it is with your fingers and point at yours and hold your hands way open showing how big yours are and shake your head.

Thanks for your support, Leah. I'm glad that you've been able to speak up when people have harassed you. You're right that no one deserves this sort of behaviour.

As a straight, white, middle-class male -- with all the privilege that comes with that -- I have never experienced this before. I am still really at a lose for what exactly I will do if it happens again.

As a weird sort of silver lining, I am now able to better empathize with women who experience sexual harassment (of this kind, or of much subtler kinds) on an unfortunately regular basis. It's one thing to empathize "in theory." It's another to have experienced a thing first hand.

Oh man. I'm so sorry this is happening. This is WAY too familiar and common an occurrence for me (though it happens less as I get older, which is kind of nice). It brings up all kinds of anger and gross-out feelings and bad memories. Whether he's actually touched you or said anything out loud is irrelevant. If you feel violated, it's harassment, (and yes, assault, as far as I'm concerned). You have a right - just like everyone else - to be in a public space and feel comfortable and safe. He does NOT have a right to make you feel uncomfortable and unsafe.

Anyway, what I've come around to doing is saying loudly and clearly in whatever way strikes me as being appropriate in the situation "Your behaviour is NOT OKAY." I've found that publicly calling harassers out will generally get them to back down - or call me names, but I can take name calling if it means that person won't bother me (and hopefully anyone else) again. If you're not comfortable saying it loud, so everyone can hear, consider speaking with him directly, making your point in no uncertain terms - but only if you feel safe doing so. I'm not sure how else you can get across to him that he's behaving inappropriately. Oh, you could make a sign. It could say something charming like "Get some goddamn lip balm, creep!" or "Dear crotch grabby guy: You're creeping me out! Stop it or imma kick you in the junk. Sincerely, the guy who's just trying to go about his day." ;)

Seriously, though. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. I want to keep ranting about how unacceptable this behaviour is and how it makes me want to punch throats, but I think I'll let it rest for now. Go find something else to be angry about. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do, Adam. Sexual harassment really, really sucks.
