Well, my fellow Edmontonians, it looks like we’re in for a cold one.
This weekend is set to be one of the coldest in recent memory, with temperatures reportedly hovering close to the -40C mark once you add in the windchill factor.
That’s damn cold.
What’s a person to do when the weather gets this cold? It’s hard to say that we should embrace it. I mean, I’m all for a big winter festival in Edmonton, but this is not the level of pure, nipple-freezing cold that I expect people to celebrate.
No, this is the sort of weather that should be endured. It’s the sort of weather that is painful and brutal, but we tough it out and then brag about surviving it. This is the kind of weather that makes Edmontonians a hardy breed. This is why we’re among the best damn people in Canada.
How do we endure this weather, then? Here are a few ideas:
- Drink warm beverages (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, hot toddies, etc.);
- Drink “winter” booze (spiced rum, spiced beers, a heavy barley wine, vodka, spiced wine, etc.);
- Play board games (I’m about to settle into a few games of Settlers of Catan, myself);
- Watch a movie or three (Christmas movies, maybe?);
- Have a favourite show on DVD? Settle in and watch an entire season in one day;
- Have sex;
- Exercise (if you have equipment at home);
- Bake some cookies (and then eat them);
- Read a book, the newspaper, or a magazine;
- Create something (paint, write, sculpt, etc.);
- Spend the day in bed, on the couch, or wherever you can curl up under a warm blanket.
Those are just a few ideas for how to keep yourself both warm and entertained on a day like the ones we’ll be facing for the next 4-5 days. If you’ve got any more suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment with your ideas.
