A New Face for a New Year
A couple of weeks ago, with Sara’s help, I picked out some new glasses. Today, they were ready to be picked up.
I headed on down to the Bay at City Centre Mall and got them properly fitted and went on my way. I think they look pretty snazzy, if I do say so myself.
It’s been a long time since I bought a new pair of frames. After I went to the optometrist sometime last month for a regular check-up, I decided that it was time to change my face. I wanted a new look.
Originally, I was planning on getting a pair of bold, thick-rimmed glasses. But the look didn’t really suit me (and Sara made sure I knew it). Still, I wanted something bolder than what I’d had in the past, so when I saw the pair pictured above, I was quite pleased.
I was even more pleased when Sara didn’t laugh and say that they looked like crap (in a loving way).
I’m very, very happy with my choice in frames. I think I’m going to be happy with my new look for a long time. Which is good, because my prescription is very strong and, as a result, very expensive. I can’t afford to change my look too often. Besides, as far as I’m concerned, glasses are pretty much a part of a person’s face.
Some people treat their glasses like a fashion accessory, to be changed whenever fashion dictates. Not so with me. My glasses are an extension of my face and of my personality. While I obviously don’t want glasses that look really out-dated, it’s more important for me to find a look that I’m happy with and that I can stand to look at in the mirror for at least a couple of years.
And so I’m glad that I’ve found a new face for the upcoming new year. It’ll serve me well into 2010 and beyond.

Agreed, glasses are not a ‘fashion accessory’. Don’t even get me started on people who wear fake glasses just to look cool and hip. For those who really need them and wear them all the time, they are a necessity, and an extension of personality. Plus they’re too damn expensive to buy multiple pairs to match with outfits and handbags and shoes!
Nice glasses, enjoy your new look!
Oh, man, the people with fake glasses…those people are hilarious. I often think of how freeing it would be to not have glasses, so those people make me laugh.
Hey! Those look really nice! A medium weight frame like that suits you.
I got a new pair of glasses over the summer as well. I wanted to go with a frame like that, but my prescription means that my lenses are too heavy for an open bottom frame. Ah well. ^^
Thanks Philip.
Your prescription must be even stronger than mine if you can’t do open bottom frames. And here I thought my lenses were big and thick! I actually pay for the high index lenses, because they’d be really thick otherwise.
In fact, my new sunglasses are really thick because I could only get polycarbonate lenses, rather than the usual high index (or Viseo) that I’d usually get.
Haha – yah, I’ve got high-index lenses as well, and they still told me to go with completely closed frames! XD I blame my mum, as she’s the one who is near-sighted (my dad is actually the opposite!) And did you get sunglasses as well today? Same frames? I know I got sunglasses a couple years ago (so they match my old, smaller, frames and now feel funny on my face!)
No, I got a different frame for the sunglasses. They’ll mainly be for driving and such (my “regular” lenses are Transitions), so I got a cheaper frame with bigger lenses. Here’s a picture: http://twitpic.com/tthx7
Really going for that mountain man beard look huh? Y’know I say this because I am jealous of your beard. Like the famous Guan Yu
I don’t know about a Guan Yu-style beard, but I’m thinking that I’ll probably let it grow until at least Christmas before giving it the usual trim. We’ll see how it looks when it’s a bit bigger/longer than usual.
