On Weddings and Marriage

A friend of mine got married yesterday. It was the first wedding I’ve been to that followed the standard Hollywood formula.  Compared to the relatively small weddings I’ve been to the in past, it was a pretty big shindig.

The ceremony was quite nice. Having never been to a Catholic wedding (or any sort of church wedding, for that matter), it was interesting to experience a ceremony that was as much about God as it was about the couple—perhaps even more so.

One thing that struck me, after Sara pointed it out, was the number of people wearing black. Men’s suits are one thing—they tend to be black, after all—but women wearing black dresses to a wedding? Maybe that’s no longer considered taboo, but it is a bit weird to see people wearing the colour of mourning to a celebration of marriage.

But, that’s a side issue. The important issue is that a good friend of mine got married to the woman who he has been with for 6 years. I don’t often see the two of them as a couple, but when I do they’re always good together. And, their wedding definitely showed that they’re still very much in love, and will be for a long time.

So to my friends Spencer and Rhonda: here’s to a happy and life-long marriage!
