Westboro Church Announces Protest of Steve Jobs’ Funeral…on an iPhone

The fringe crazies at Westboro Church are going to protest Steve Jobs’ funeral for…well, for reasons I can’t possibly explain. As best I can tell, they believe this titan of capitalism should have done more to support their particular religious views. I don’t know. But, their tweet is delicious…

Well.

If you think Steve Jobs’ funeral is worthy of protest (!), shouldn’t you maybe not want to use his one of his products to announce it? I mean, according to them, he gave God no glory and taught sin. (!) And yet, they will use his greatest innovation to spread the word of their protest. Couldn’t they find a Droid phone for this?

On our rare kidless night off, I took my wife to see Drive. I was completely ready to write it off as as substituted-Statham drive/murder/fuck movie [hell, one of those words IS the title of the film], but the reviews I was seeing were surprisingly positive. Given the lack of other options in the cinema we gave took Drive for a test [PUN REDACTED]. I was quite surprised. A) Because they movie we saw and the movie that had been advertised had essentially NOTHING to do with each other. They seriously took the entire trailer from the first 15 minutes of the film which contains the only “anonymous crime driver for hire” sequence in the entire movie. And B) It was actually quite good.

Drive is a very slow, very thoughtful art house film. Not at all the ACTION-SPEED-MURDER-SEXcapade I had been lead to believe. Ryan Gosling has maybe six lines in the entire thing. I imagine 110 pages of his script just said “Ok, now look at her slyly, kinda bashfully, but also a little intimidating like you got something to hide.” The other 10 pages said “STAB THAT GUY IN THE NECK AND GET BATHED IN A FOUNTAIN OF HIS ARTERIAL BLOOD!!!” You see, that’s the other thing about Drive that made it… unique? You come in expecting bullets and blood in every scene, but instead you get a beautifully shot love story, sparse dialog, all at a relaxed pace. This serves to lull you into a false sense of calm, then SKLEEEESH! It’s knife time.

The violence in Drive is so unexpected, so infrequent and so brutal that you remember each and every act for a lot longer than you want to. The killings stick with you and keep you uncomfortable for at least as long as it takes to get to the next one. Only 5 or 6 people die in this movie and all of them do so in a spectacularly unsettling fashion. One death in particular still skeeves me out.

All of that said, I highly recommend it. Just know what you’re getting into.

STORE NEWS: The “Winter Is Coming” shirt should be in the store tonight or tomorrow. I’m excited.

ANOTHER THING: After a power surge last week, my file server (the one that holds all of my HE-related files) died (despite being plugged into a heavy duty surge supressor). The drives were OK but I have to buy a new enclosure ($150) to access them over my network. The same day I found out a miscalibration of our sprinkler system made our water bill for this month $200 more than we were expecting. So $350 I don’t really have just flew out the window. Mock Duck and Other Meat Alternatives

I’m trying to eat less meat. I’ve got a few different reasons for doing this—health, environmental, and financial. The one thing I’ve been worried about, though, is how to get enough protein in my diet without eating meat

As it turns out, this isn’t that hard, especially since I’ll simply be limiting my meat intake, not eliminating it from my diet entirely.

My real question, upon closer investigation wasn’t: “How do I get enough protein in my diet?” but rather: “How do I cut meat from my diet without feeling like I’m cutting meat from my diet?” I wasn’t looking for alternative sources of protein; I was looking for meat analogues.

Sure, I could eat a lot of quinoa and beans. But sometimes, I just want a taco or a burger.

While there are plenty of mock-meat options out there, I’m not too keen on the highly processed nature of many of them (plus, they are often more expensive than real meat, which cancels out the money-saving aspect of this dietary change).

After asking about non-meat protein sources on MetaFilter, I headed to the grocery store with my new found knowledge. The Chinese grocery store, it turns out, is an amazing place for vegetarian groceries. I picked up some TVP (textured vegetable protein, which sounds awful but is actually pretty good; more on this later), some vital wheat gluten (I’m going to make seitan), and a few other vegetarian protein sources.

Last night, I made TVP tacos. They were delicious. While the TVP didn’t have quite the same texture or flavour as ground beef, it was close enough for this meat-eater. The TVP was simple to prepare, easy to work with, and significantly cheaper than the equivalent amount of ground beef. Because TVP is relatively flavourless on its own, it really took on the flavour of the taco seasoning. It wasn’t meat, but it almost tasted like meat. I quite enjoyed it.

I plan to make some seitan later this week. It’s a bit of a time consuming process, so I may make more than I need and freeze the extras. I’m looking forward to the seitan, because I’m pretty sure that this is what the mock-meat at Padmanadi is made from. The food at Padmanadi is delicious, so if I can make something similar at home I’ll be very happy.

I’m only a few days into to my reduced-meat diet, but so far it is going well. I am quite happy with the results. Now, let’s see if I can stick with it.

Alison Redford is Alberta’s New Premier

For two weeks now, since the closing of the first ballot in the Alberta PC Leadership Race, it was expected that Gary Mar would win the party leadership. To the surprise of just about everyone, Alison Redford ended up winning 51% of the votes on Saturday’s second ballot and secured a narrow win as a result.

What does this mean for Alberta? It means that have  new premier and that we won’t be having a fall election (unlike Mar, Redford is currently a sitting MLA and she has committed to not calling a fall election). It also means that Alberta will see its first female premier.

Redford was the most progressive of the leadership candidates and now she is the premier-designate. What does this mean for progressives in Alberta?

Is Redford’s election the result of two-minute Tories who bought PC party memberships in order to get a progressive politician into power (through what sometimes seems to be the only way to do so)? If so, will those same voters elect members of the Liberal, New Democratic, or Alberta parties in the inevitable spring election? If this wasn’t a case of “two-minutes Tories,” does this signal a shift to the left within the PC party?

Does the election of Redford, as a progressive, hinder the chances of progressives from other parties getting elected, since the PCs now look — at least for the time being — like a changed party?

I don’t have answers to these questions. I’m asking these genuinely, not as a rhetorical device. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Facebook Is Tracking Your Every Move on the Web; Here’s How to Stop It

Over the weekend, Dave Winer wrote an article at Scripting.com explaining how Facebook keeps track of where you are on the web after logging in without your consent. Nik Cubrilovic dug a little deeper, and discovered that Facebook can still track where you are, even if you log out. Facebook, for its part, has denied the claims. Regardless of who you believe, here’s how to protect yourself, and keep your browsing history to yourself. More »

This is something I’ve wanted to express for a while, and this particular controversy that erupted last week has graciously refocused me.

This is a stand-alone comic week, but there’s still gonna be strips every weekday for this week instead of the usual stand-alone MWF schedule.  I had too many stand-alone gag ideas and loose ends that needed to be tied up that needed to be done all at once.
