As I was catching up on my blog reading, I came across an entry on Allie’s blog where she discusses the process by which her husband makes coffee on Sunday mornings. I had neither seen nor heard of an AeroPress until I read the post.
After checking out the Wikipedia article about AeroPress, I totally want one. It sounds like it makes an even better cup of coffee than a French press. It’d probably also kick the crap out of my moka pot.
The one thing that I don’t like about the AeroPress is that it uses disposable paper filters.
The lack of any disposable filters in a French press and a moka pot is one of the big selling features of those two coffee-making methods, for me. That, and I honestly think that they make better coffee than your standard drip machine (which can also be used without disposable filters, if you buy one of those reusable metal-mesh filters).
Plus, I’m supposed to be simplifying my life and reducing the amount of stuff that I own, not increasing it.
So, despite the fact that I think the AeroPress is a really cool coffeemaker, I probably won’t end up buying one. Having said that, if anyone who knows me in real life owns an AeroPress, I would love to try a cup of coffee made from one.
And, since we’re on the subject, something for the comments section: what is your preferred method for brewing coffee at home?

I think Mark Frauenfelder used to blog about his Aeropress on boingboing years ago…
My preferred method is still the good old french press. Probably because it is nice and slow, and hands on. I also like seeing the coffee bloom and leave a beautiful foam on top after I stir it.

I like the ritual of the French press, too. I’ve often thought about getting a drip maker for the convenience that it provides (I actually had one, for a while, that made one or two travel cups and poured right into the cup(s), but got rid of it because I didn’t use it enough). But, ultimately, I enjoy the ritual of the French press too much.
I think that, even if I got a drip machine for convenience during the work week, I’d still use a French press on the weekend.
I find that I really don’t drink a lot of coffee in the morning, I wait until “coffee time” (~10am) to either buy or make coffee. In that sense, if I had an office, I would probably still use a french press. As it stands I tend to buy coffee (when I’m at school) since I would have no way of making any.
I’ve toyed with making coffee in the morning, but my heart just isn’t in it, even if it is a drip machine. I just don’t want coffee right after I wake up.
I’m also resistant of kitchen machines. For all that I geek out over stupid gadgets elsewhere I still do most of my cooking stuff by hand. I don’t even have a food processor (I have knives). I think it would be a betrayal of my core kitchen ethics to get a drip coffee maker — unless it was one like Kyla’s grandparents have which is really just the filter cup that you pour the hot water over yourself.
