All the Cool Kids are Tumbling

Tumblr: it’s suddenly become the cool kid on the blogging block.

It seems so easy to use. It seems like it makes random, short blog posts a breeze and a blast.

It seems like something I want to try.

In fact, I’m pretty sure I had a Tumblr blog at one point, but gave up on it because it was just getting to be another blog to update (I think I had 5, at one point).

But, given that this blog is often just embedded YouTube videos and random quotes from other blogs, I wonder if Tumblr might not make more sense than WordPress for me. I mean, I love WordPress and all of it’s power, but is it worthwhile to use a powerful CMS if I’m not really making use of it?

Of course, if I did switch this blog over to Tumblr, I’d lose all of my current posts. I mean, the database would still exist, but I’d have to either move it somewhere else or use a different domain and/or directory for the Tumblr blog (I know I could just go with something like adamsnider.tumblr.com—in fact, it appears that I did, at one point—but I kind of like having my own domain name).

The point of this rambling post, I suppose, is to ask for feedback and opinions. Tumblr vs WordPress, particularly in the context of my blog, what are your thoughts?

Author’s note: After thinking it over for a few minutes, I think that, if I did switch to Tumblr, I’d probably keep this blog as-is, and turn the home page into more of a proper website that would promote “Adam the Poet” and “Adam the Writer for Hire.” This blog would still exist, but I probably wouldn’t update it, and I’d probably just use adamsnider.tumblr.com for my everyday blogging.

You can make WP do the exact same thing that Tumblr does. All you need is a theme (like Thematic, Sandbox, etc) that can style categories and you can thus have a tumblr style blog. Not too hard to do. That way you can have the best of both worlds.

Good to know. But is there a “Share on WordPress” bookmarklet like there is for Tumblr? Because, while not absolutely necessary, that would be incredibly handy.

Well, maybe I don’t need Tumblr at all, after all! I don’t know how I didn’t know about the Press This bookmarklet sooner. Thanks for the info, Allan.
