Burlington on Whyte Tobacconists: One of My Favourite Places

As regular readers will be well aware, I enjoy a good cigar now and again. There are a surprising number of places to buy cigars in this city, but there is only one that I go to with regularity. Burlington on Whyte is one of my favourite places. I love walking inside and smelling the sweet tobacco scent, even before you’ve entered the walk-in humidor. The shop has a very classic look to it–like an old fashioned smoking room–and the staff are absolutely wonderful. Chris and his crew are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and always willing to help out a newbie.

I wish I’d started my cigar smoking back in the days when it was still legal to smoke indoors. Some of the half-stories I’ve been told while buying my smokes make me wish it was still possible to sit in the shop to smoke and chat with the guys (and hear the whole story). Alas, this is no longer possible.

Despite that, Chris and his staff have been known to lock the shop and join customers for a smoke outside on the Avenue on slow days. It’s not uncommon to see three or four people standing around outside the shop smoking cigars, or the occasional pipe.

If you’re a fan of cigars or pipe tobacco, there is no better place in the city to go than Burlington. If you head down there this weekend, you may even run into me. I’ve been meaning to go down and talk to them about getting setup with a “starter” pipe and some good pipe tobacco, to see if I’ll enjoy pipe smoking as much as I think I will.
