I viewed my first set of condos today. It was, I have to admit, very odd. The main reason for this is that the place I looked at, like most of the places I’ll be looking at, is an apartment convert. It’s not even a convert, really. No renovations have been done, and people are still living in the units. People were home in all of the units I looked at, which made it very awkward.
Most of the people were surprisingly friendly, although one guy was pretty annoyed (mostly because he was told that we were coming later than we were), and bitched that he hated the building for a variety of reasons. Many of his reasons were probably true, but I also wondered he was still living there if he had been, “wanting to get out of here for a long time.”
Luckily for him, his suite will probably be the last to sell, since it has a carpeted bathroom. That’s right, the bathroom is fully carpeted. Disgusting. I’ll assume that whomever buys that place will immediately tear that carpet out because, well, it’s carpet…in the bathroom.
Odds are that I won’t buy a unit in that building. The only one I saw that I really liked didn’t have a balcony. It was surprisingly large, and had two rather large bedrooms, but it didn’t have a balcony, and that was pretty much enough to kill the sale for me right away. Plus, there seemed to be something wrong with the heating system in the building, as it was really, really hot in there.
But, despite the problems, it wasn’t a terrible building. If I was looking for an investment property, rather than one to actually live in myself, I would not be at all opposed to buying a unit in that building. However, since I’m trying to buy a home, that I’ll likely live in for several years, in order to build some equity so I can upgrade to a house at some point, I think I want something a little bit better than what I saw.
On the plus side, the realtor I’m working with seems to be a pretty good guy, so I think things will work out ultimately. He’s going to look for some more places for me, and hopefully he’ll find me one that I like.

That would be correct. I have a bad habit of typing “who” instead of “how,” and vice versa, when I’m typing quickly.
