Dadeo: One of My Favourite Places

In a blatant rip off of Scott McKeen’s ongoing series for the Edmonton Journal, I’ve decided to make “My Favourite Places” a regular column here at Ink Slinger. I’m going to try and write a piece about one of my favourite Edmonton eateries, watering holes, galleries, book stores, or whatever, once a week. Like McKeen’s column, I’m going to try and publish these pieces on Fridays, so that you’ll have ideas for the weekend.
This week, we’re going to Dadeo. My friend Roy Picou would claim that Dadeo doesn’t serve authentic Cajun food. Seeing as he’s from New Orleans, I trust that he’s right. But, seeing as I’ve never been to the bayou, Dadeo suits me just fine.
Set inside a retro, 50s-style diner, Dadeo serves up killer Cajun and Creole cuisine at damn good prices. The portion sizes are usually huge–I’ve often opted for an appetizer in place of a full meal if I’m there for lunch–and I’ve never walked away feeling hungry.
The food is excellent. I’m a big fan of the sweet potato fries (or poutine, which is even more deadly), corn fritters with jalapeño jelly, and the pulled-pork po’boy (even though the large amounts of au jus tend to make it a very messy/soggy sandwich to eat). The fresh squeezed lemonade is perfect on a hot summer day–it has the perfect blend of sour and sweet, and goes down easy. I imagine it would be great with vodka, if you were in the mood for an “adult beverage.” As far as I know, they don’t actually serve and vodka-lemonade at Dadeo, but if you really wanted, you could ask and see what happens.
Speaking of adult beverages, Dadeo is licensed as a bar, not a restaurant, so it’s strictly 18+ (we found this out the hard way when we tried to go there on Father’s Day, and were turned away because my brother was a week shy of being legal–not sure how I’ve never noticed the “No Minors” sign before). If you’re planning a day out with the kids, Dadeo is not going to fit into your plans, unfortunately.
If you’re of legal age and in the mood for great food, in an cool, laid back atmosphere, I highly recommend that you check out Dadeo.
