Doan’s Vietnamese Restaurant: One of My Favourite Places

Author’s note: I’ve been to Doan’s downtown location dozens of times and yet, somehow, I’ve never written about it on Ink Slinger. I’ve been to the south side location as well, and it’s more or less the same. So, if you live on the south side, and don’t want to come downtown for a great meal, just pretend that I’m writing about the south side location.

I’ve come along way from my starving student days in recent years, but I’m still not made of money. As such, I try to find places that serve good food at low prices. Doan’s is one such place.

Despite the fact that nearly everyone I know raves about the place, a lot of people have never heard of it. While I think more people should know about Doan’s, and check it out, I’m secretly glad that not many people do. It’s one of the few restaurants you can get into on a Friday or Saturday night without having to wait an hour for a table to open up. In fact, I’ve never once had to wait for a table at either location.

The one thing I will warn you about is that the service is not fast. It’s not super slow, but it isn’t fast. Depending on which server is working your table, you may never have your water refilled. But, that’s a fairly rare occurrence, and the prices and quality of the food more than make up for it. I’ve never had a bad meal at Doan’s.

The Wor Wonton Soup is killer, and pretty much anything with lemon grass is a guaranteed sure thing. I’m also a big fan of the Seafood Sizzling Platter. I’m pretty sure that there is nothing on the menu that costs more than $20, and the Combo Meals can be had for only $9.95. Hell, even the beer is (slightly) cheaper than most restaurants.

If you’re a fan of Vietnamese cuisine, and inexpensive meals, Doan’s is definitely worth checking out. I just hope that not too many of you check it out, because I don’t want to be stuck waiting for a table the next time I go for dinner!
