Edmonton Art & Festival Scene

It’s Simple Saturday, so I thought I’d just give you a brief listing of what’s happening in the Edmonton art and festival scene right now.

The Works–Edmonton’s annual visual art and design festival–is in progress, and runs until July 5. There’s so much to see, I don’t even know where to begin. I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but I intend to at least take a look at Unreal City, and I recommend that you do the same.

The Edmonton International Jazz Festival is also running this weekend. The last day is Canada Day (Sunday, July 1), so if you want to take in some of the finest jazz this town will see all year, you should definitely check out the Jazz Fest.

The Free Will Players are back again this summer to put on the River City Shakespeare Festival. This year’s plays are Two Gentlemen of Verona–a musical adaptation of The Two Gentlemen of Verona–and The Winter’s Tale, which contains what is arguably the most famous stage direction in English theatre: “Exit, pursued by a bear.” The River City Shakespeare Festival runs until July 22.

Finally, from now until August 31, you can check out The Shatner Show at the Uppercase gallery in Calgary. I know I said this was a listing of Edmonton events, but as far as I know the show isn’t coming to Edmonton. Personally, I think it’s totally worth the drive down to Cowtown. I might see if my newly-legal brother wants to take a trip down with me next weekend, as I know he’d totally be into a show like this.
