Gnotes: Rhymes and Beats

A few weeks, I was contacted by someone involved in the promotion of an indie hip hop artist called Gnotes. He has a new album out, called Rhymes and Beats. You can listen to the whole album for free on the album web page, to see if you like it or not.
I listened to the album a while ago, and have been meaning to post about it ever since. It’s fallen to the back of my mind a few times, but I’m finally getting to it.
My first thought, after hearing Rhymes and Beats for the first time, was that it’s not quite like any other hip hop record I’ve heard before. The instrumentals are more vibrant and alive than a lot of albums these days. There are clearly a wide range of musical influences at play here, and it makes for a unique sound. In an era where a lot of hip hop sounds indistinguishable from every other song on the airwaves, the freshness that Gnotes brings to the table is refreshing.
But, don’t just take my word for it. Give the album a listen, and decide for yourself. If you’re interesting in purchasing the album, it’s available from Amazon, CD Baby (which is slightly cheaper). For those who prefer their music in a purely digital format, the album is apparently available on iTunes, though I can’t seem to find it in the iTunes Store.
There is also a video for the song “Throw Your Nickels Up.” I can’t seem to get the YouTube video embedded into the blog properly, so you’ll have to follow the link to view it.
