Hilarious Hannibal

Ashley and I went to see Hannibal Rising this weekend. It wasn’t very impressive. To be honest, I thought it was kind of stupid. It certainly wasn’t the psychological thriller that The Silence of the Lambs was. It also wasn’t the horrible gore-fest that some people are making it out to be. It wasn’t great, nor was it terrible. It was mediocre, which, in a strange way, is almost worse than being terrible. I suppose it’s because terrible is at least memorable, while mediocre is forgettable.

There was, however, one standout moment in the movie. I won’t give away any of the plot, except to say that Hannibal is tracking down a specific group of people to kill in this story. One of the people has fled Europe for Canada, following World War II. In the course of tracking this person down, a moment of wonderfully unintentional humour occurs.

In an effort to save himself, one of Hannibal’s victims reveals where the Canadian character is living. “In a small town…just outside of Saskatoon,” he is told. And the entire theatre erupts in laughter. It was an especially Canadian moment, and I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that it was the best part of the movie. As we were leaving the theatre, I heard a woman turn to her male companion and chuckle, “In a small town…just outside of Saskatoon.”
