I Want to be a Wine Connoisseur

Alright, I don’t really want to be a wine connoisseur. I would like to have a passable knowledge of wine, but I don’t really intend to be a master taster. I would, however, like to expand my palette a bit. I recently bought a wine rack. It’s only 1/6 full right now, and three of the four bottles are “safe bets.” By this, I mean that they are wines that I’ve had in the past, and that I know I enjoy: Painted Turtle, Little Penguin, and [yellow tail].

The fourth is relatively safe, as it’s a type of wine that I like (a Riesling), but it’s a brand I’ve never tasted before. The point I’m making is that, with one exception, I only have wines that I’ve tried before. While it’s certainly good to have a few favourites on hand, I’d like to pick up a few new bottles.

However, I don’t want to go to the store and start picking stuff out at random. I could ask the staff at the liquor store for advice, and I probably will. I might make a trip over to the liquor store in City Centre, in fact, just for that purpose. The family that runs the store is very friendly, and very knowledgeable about alcohol of all kinds. The wife — I realize now that I’ve never learned her name — has recommended a few winners for me, so I’d like to go back and see what else she can help me out with.

The point of this post, though, is to ask you — my readers — for recommendations. I tend more toward reds than whites, and Pinot Noir tends to be my favourite variety, with Merlot coming in a close second. Having said that, I’m open to just about anything. Give me recommendations (and recommended food pairings), and I’ll write up reviews as I try them. Just don’t expect any snobbish, connoisseur-ial reviews. I’ll do my best to talk the talk, but I’m just some punk kid from Edmonton, so don’t expect me to have the most refined palette in the world (at least, not at first).

You know, I was thinking about picking up a bottle of the Naked Grape the last time I was in the liquor store. I’m not sure why I didn’t. But, I’ll take your advice.

    Thanks, Mandie.

Just not into wine at all, rather drink toilet bowl cleaner.

The difference, of course, is that wine doesn’t melt your insides.
