In the Land of Castro

In just under twelve hours, I will be flying east across the country, and then south toward an island in the Caribbean. The island, as you may well know, is a little place called Cuba. For the next seven days, I will be sipping rum, smoking cigars, hiking through Havana, and relaxing next to bodies of water both natural and man-made. I will be dancing at the disco, and I will be getting burnt under the near-equatorial sun. In summary, I will be having a great time. I’ve got to say, the way things have been going the past couple of months, I definitely need this vacation.

I will not be updating this blog while I am gone. I will not be taking my cell phone. If my hotel room has a TV, I will not be watching it. I will be enjoying time away from the high tech. I believe that my hotel has internet access, but I will not be using it. I will be living on rum and Cuban tobacco for a week. On top of that, I’m going to be sitting next to the most beautiful creature on the planet for nearly the entire time. A man could hardly ask for more.

I hope the weather here is warm while I’m gone. I’m not one of those people who hopes that the weather back home is crap, as though this would some how make the vacation weather more pleasurable. I know I’ll be enjoying myself, so I hope that everyone back home will be as well. When I return, I will post pictures. I will also probably share cigars with certain people (I’m going camping with “the guys” a mere five days after I return to Canada). And, with a little luck, this trip will also get the creative juices flowing. Perhaps Cuba will inspire me to write some verse–something I’ve been doing far too little of lately.

Oh, it was good. Time well spent. And well wasted (if you choose to look at time spent lounging on the beach or by the pool as time wasted).

I’m a mite burnt, and a tad ill (I think it may have been the water, even though I mostly stuck to bottled stuff), but I’m not complaining. It was a blast.

And, in fact, I did get at least one poem out of it, so I can finally bring something new to Kasbar this week.
