ink slinger publishing

I’m launching my own “underground” publishing house. It’s not so much a publishing house as it is me, with a computer and a printer, and maybe a photocopier at Staples if manually flipping pages to print double-sided gets to be too inconvenient for me.

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, and from previous uses of the name, I’m calling this endeavour: ink slinger publishing.

For now, I’ll only be printing my own work. I’ll be starting with single poems, or very small collections of poems, and publishing them as one-off pamphlets. I’ll probably put together a chapbook or 2 in the near future. I’ll likely produce spoken word CDs under this imprint, as well.

I’ve already got one pamphlet ready to go. I just need to buy some high quality paper to print it on. I’ve got to tweak the layout a little bit, too, but that’s just a matter of adjusting the margins, at this point.

The only issue I’m unsure of is price. What’s a reasonable price for a single pamphlet? While a certain part of me wants to say, “Free!” (and, undoubtedly, I’ll give away some free copies from time to time), that’s not the right answer. I’m thinking $1-3 will be a good price, depending on the length of the work.

This current pamphlet, containing my 3-part “City of Champions Suite,” is probably going to go for $2. Three poems (well, one longish poem in 3 parts) for $2. Does that sound reasonable?

Good for you! What a way to be pro-active. I think $2 is fair. Free is great but a guy’s got to make a living!

I certainly sympathize with your post about being stuck in an office all day. I can tell you that sitting in an office for 8 hours, 5 days a week has done some rather negative things for my health. You don’t notice it at first, it isn’t until the millionth trip to the doctor that you start to realise that you’re deteriorating.

Sorry, I hope that didn’t depress you!
