My New Yorkers

Like most writers, I have certain publications that I’d like to see my work published in someday–my New Yorkers. These are the publications that I consider to be great, and that I aspire to appear in as a sort of validation of my talent. Validation isn’t quite the right word, but it comes the closest to describing the feeling I will get should I ever have a by-line in one of these publications. Below is my list, and a brief explanation of why I’d like to be published in each publication.
Time Magazine: In addition to having an absolutely huge distribution, Time is also one of the best examples of what a news magazine should be. Despite the occasional publicity stunt (e.g. making everyone who participates in social media the Person of the Year for 2006), the articles are almost always well written, well researched, and generally thought-provoking. There are a lot of news magazines that aren’t worth reading. Time is one of the few that is worth your time (no pun intended).
Dwell: You may not have heard of Dwell before, but that doesn’t matter to me. Dwell is a monthly publication focusing on modernist and post-modernist design and architecture. Though I’ve never been formally trained in design, I’ve developed an interest in it in recent years. Dwell has helped to spark my interest even more. As with Time, the quality of writing in Dwell is of a high calibre, and it always makes me think.
The Walrus: In some ways, The Walrus is like a Canadian version of Time; it has a far more literary tone, though, so The New Yorker might be a better point of reference. I don’t think The Walrus have a very big distribution, but I feel that it’s one of the best Canadian magazines currently in publication. Thought-provoking essays, well written articles, and quality short stories (fiction) make The Walrus one of my New Yorkers.
Playboy: It might strike some of you as odd that I would list Playboy (NSFW) as one of the top magazines that I’d like to be published in. You may not realize it, but Playboy has published fiction by some of the best writers of our time. Getting published in Playboy means that you’ve made a name for yourself. To be honest, though, I’m not sure if Playboy even publishes fiction these days, so it may be a moot point.
As time goes on, this list may change according to the subject matter I’m interested in writing about. It also depends on both the continued quality of these magazines, and on the quality of new magazines that may appear in the future. For now, though, this list is my “Holy Grail.”
I’ve shown you mine, now what are some of your New Yorkers?
