Naked Grape Chardonnay

I picked up a couple of bottles of Naked Grape today, on the recommendation of Mandie Lopatka. I grabbed a Merlot and a Chardonnay, as she recommended. Since I was having a meatless meal, I figured that the white would be a better match, so I threw the Chardonnay in some ice and let it chill. (Speaking of which, I need a proper ice bucket. Trying to use an over-sized vase was more than a little awkward, though it did work.)
The wine complimented my tomato and rice dish very well, and it’s excellent even on it’s own. Naked Grape is unoaked wine (hence the name). My experience with whites, for reasons that I’m not entirely sure of, has mostly been with Sauvignon Blanc, so I can’t say for sure whether the fact that there was no oak handling involved made this wine better or worse. I’ve not had much experience with Chardonnay. But, I do know that is was a damn good wine. It had a nice buttery flavour, and I want to say that it had a silky texture to it. I’m not entirely sure that means anything, but that’s the impression it left me with.
As Mandie mentioned in her comment, Naked Grape is a very inexpensive wine. A 750mL bottle was only $11.44 at Liquor World/Depot. The Chardonnay, at least, is more than worth it. I suspect that the Merlot is just as good. For that price, I’ll certainly be keeping a bottle or two on hand from now on. As Mandie said, it’s “really good…too good…”
