Pink Shoes

I turned my black & white checkered shoes into black & pink checkered shoes. The white parts had become gray, so I threw them in the wash with a few other large items (towels, mostly) so that they wouldn’t bounce around the machine too much. Not thinking of the potential consequences, I thought it would be a good idea to throw in the rug from the entry way of my apartment. This rug, of course, has a lot of red in it.
Having never been through the wash before, there was a lot of dye the was ready to come out of the rug. This is why my shoes are now pink. I have looked online for a way to fix this, and it seems that Rit (the dye makers) make a colour remover that will do the trick. But, this might fade the black parts of the shoes.
Before I go and potentially make my shoes look even worse than they already do, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make the pink parts white again? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Have you considered white out?
(But seriously, you should ask your mother - moms know the answer to everything).
I would ask my mom, but she’s in Wakefield, QC at the moment, and I don’t feel like calling her to ask about shoes. Hence, I am asking the internet for help, instead.
I don’t know how to help, but take photos because this sounds funny
Well, dunno if it will work AFTER the washing, but have you tried soaking them in a bucket o’ water with the power of Oxy Clean? It might work.
And for future reference, if you throw a scoop of that magical stuff into your wash, with your regular detergent, 9 times out of 10 it will prevent the color from being transferred to the other stuff. DON’T ASK ME HOW! I don’t know.
I wear a white chef’s top and a red apron to work. I wash them together. A HUGE no-no. But I put a scoop of that stuff into the wash, cold wash, and the red doesn’t transfer. But the first time I did that, I ruined a white top because I accidentally put the red apron in the wash with it. But that time I didn’t use the oxy clean.
It’s worth a shot if you want to save your shoes. Otherwise, you might want to get some pink shirts and black pants to match your fancy new shoes.
(I don’t remember how I stumbled upon your blog. But here I am, still reading.)
@Mike: I’ll try and remember to take some pictures tonight.
@Seleena: Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a try. And, thanks for reading.
Good Lord,
Don’t wear them in public. Remember “Curtis” from the Scout Group? I know your Mom and I both still think of him as “Pink Shoes”.
I don’t plan on wearing them, I’m just pissed that I ruined $99 dollar shoes. Hopefully, the Oxy Clean will work.
