Selling Votes for Cell Phones

An article that I read in today’s Edmonton Journal made me want to throw away my cell phone. The article deals with people who are unwilling to give up their cell phone, and what they would be willing to give up in exchange for the privilege of keeping their mobile.

Of the nearly 1,100 cellphone users polled for the Palm Canada/Leger Marketing study, one in 10 would rather lose their mother-in-law than their phone, while one in 20 would surrender the right to vote before surrendering their mobile. Another three per cent would give up their household pet, two per cent would trade their driver’s licence or job for their phone, and one per cent claim they’d give a limb.

Five perfect of those polled would surrender the right to vote, so long as they didn’t have to give up their cell phones? Are you fucking kidding me? What kind of fool would trade democracy for a cell phone? Clearly, these people are either exaggerating, or they’ve got a serious mental health problem. The willingness to trade a limb for a piece of mobile technology is equally disturbing.

The most ironic bit, I think, is that two percent of respondants would trade their job for their cell phone. I’d wager it’s a bit tough to pay your phone bill without a job. Of course, logic never got in the way of an unheathly obsession before. Why should cellular phones be any different?

The article also tackles the hypocracy of the average cell phone user, with “83 per cent consider[ing] it a ’serious faux pas’ to let the phone ring in movie theatres, during meetings or in the library,” yet nearly half admit to having done so themselves.

It saddens me that people would give up so much for this device. I’d never give up my parrots for my cell phone! That would be the day!

Just want to say…nice redesign. This template is nice and clean. How do you like Wordpress? I’m a fan of Textpattern myself…

Thanks Mike, I like the new look too. Clean and minimalist works for me.

As for Wordpress, I’m digging it so far. The only thing I’d complain about is that there’s no built in spell checker. But, that forces me to proofread more closely, which is a good thing, I suspect.
