Simple Things That Make the Day

There’s an old axiom: “It’s the simple things in life that make us happy.” There are variations of the phrase, but they’re all saying the same thing. It’s the simple things that matter most. The things that ultimately matter most, and give meaning to our lives are often the simplest. Similarly, I think it’s the simple things that help each of us to get through the day. Whether it’s treating ourselves to a good cup of coffee on the way to work on a Monday morning, or coming home to the ones we love at the end of a hard fought week, it’s the simple things that get us through.
On that note, I’ve complied a short list of the simple things that make my workdays more manageable:
- CJSR on the radio on the drive to work
- A tall mug of green tea to start the morning
- Choosing not to drink the sludge that passes for coffee in the office break room
- Reading the CBC online news during my lunch break
- The Sunshine Girl–ironically, the only redeeming quality of the Edmonton Sun (excepting, of course, the stellar sports section)
- Being lucky enough to work with people I actually enjoy talking to (most of the time)
- The drive home–as rage inducing as it can sometimes be, it means I’m almost home.
- And, of course, coming home to the one I love.

I can really appreciate your list. I think that we don’t always appreciate the things in our lives to their full extents.
It’s the strangest thing that I stumbled upon your website (from the “live at the Kasbar” link). I couldn’t sleep so I was looking thru my favorite little notebook and stopped on my list of things that make me smile. Poetry is one of them, so obviously, I put the book down to check out ‘raving poets’ and then ended up here. Your list is fabulous and I’ve stolen your cup of coffee line for the “happy” page in my little notebook. I do love my morning coffee. - Jen
