Spontaneity and Road Trips

I think this summer will involve numerous spontaneous road trips. Maybe I’ll just up and drive to Calgary early on a Saturday morning–spend the day on Stephen Avenue checking out the art galleries and museums. Or maybe I’ll drive out to Jasper for the weekend, just for the hell of it. I’m pretty sure that the Rockies will never get boring.

Some of these trips, I think, will be solo trips. I’ve been thinking about going camping by myself a lot lately. Just heading out to the mountains for a couple of days to get away from everything; maybe take one of the bottles of Cuban rum, some cigars, and try to write. Self-inflicted isolation can be good for the soul, sometimes. I don’t know how spontaneous this could be, given that the weather is nice, and the summer campgrounds are open (meaning that I might have to reserve a site), but I wouldn’t necessarily mind just driving up for the day and hanging out at a day use site (sans alcohol, obviously, if I’ll be driving back the same night).

Even Calgary might be given a solo trip. Admittedly, most things urban are more fun with other people, but there is something oddly appealing about being alone in a (relatively) unfamiliar city. If I did Calgary without a friend, though, it would definitely be a day trip only. While there is enough to do to make it worth a weekend trip, some things are just more enjoyable when there is someone to share the experience with.

Here are some of the places I’d like to go this summer (whether as a spontaneous, “Let’s go to ____!” trip, or as something that is planned out ahead of time):

* Jasper
* Calgary
* Drumheller
* Dinosaur Provincial Park (I’d like to camp in the badlands; I’ve never done it before)
* Saskatoon and/or Regina (This might require a long weekend)
* Sylvan Lake
* Random small towns across Alberta

I’d also like to get out to Toronto to visit my friend Chris sometime in August, but I don’t know if I’ll have the money for the flight. And, since I won’t really have more than a day or two of vacation time built up at that point, it’s kind of hard to justify spending $1000 on a plane ticket when I’m only going to be in town for 3 or 4 days.

Anyway, like I said, I’m planning on making a couple of solo trips, but I’d also like to take some friends along on some trips. If you’re interested in driving to any of these places with me, leave me a comment or send me an email. Then, when I decide, “I think I want to go to Jasper tomorrow,” I will be able to call you up at the last minute and go. You’d better be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice, though!

    I’d be interested when I’m back from my holidays in June / July.
