Spring Camping

I’m hesitant to say that spring has sprung. I think that the last time I said that, it got very cold the next day. Hopefully, though, spring is here to stay this time. If nothing else, it seems that the weather will be nice this weekend. This is good, since I’m going camping with the guys.
We’re loading up the ol’ Acura and heading for Jasper. By some amazing accident of fate, all four of us have tomorrow off, so we’re going to head out around noon, that way we’ll still have a good hour or two of daylight to setup camp when we arrive. It will also be early enough that we can catch a decent meal in town before we start roughing it.
It’s been ages since I’ve been out to the mountains. It’s been at least a year, but I think it’s probably more like two or three. In my mind, that’s almost shameful. One of the most beautiful places in the world is only hours away, and I haven’t been in years. I suppose it’s not quite as shameful as it would be if I lived in Calgary, where the mountains are even closer, but it’s still pretty bad.
I’m looking forward to getting out of town, and just relaxing with the guys. I am surrounded by estrogen far too often (until a month ago, I was the only male in the section of the office I used to work in, and I was the only guy on the Cuba trip), so it will be good to hang out with “just the guys” for a weekend. Plus, my friend Chris is in town from Kingston, Ontario, so it will be good to catch up with him without any of the distractions of urban life.
I’m looking forward to recharging my batteries before I start this new job on Monday. Even though I’ve essentially had two weeks off work, I don’t feel like I’ve had much rest this week. There have been a whole lot of stresses weighing on me, so it will be good to get away from it all for a few days: relax, play smoke some cards, smoke a cigar or two, drink a little bit of brandy by the fire, and enjoy the mountain air.
