Edmonton Summer Writing Workshop

I haven’t been writing enough lately. Partly, this is because I have had the worst case of writer’s block that I’ve ever had for the past few months. With rare except, I have written nothing except press releases and a couple of industry articles at work. My personal writing has been all but non-existent–no poems, no stories, no essays, nothing. There is another reason, though, beside the writer’s block. I haven’t had anything to push me to write.
I tend to do most of my writing during Raving Poets. I try to have something new to read every week. The “need” for something new motivates me to write. The writer’s block hurt this process during the last month and a half of the most recent series, but that was the exception to the rule.
I’ve spoken to a few people, and I know that they feel the same. With that in mind, I’m proposing a summer writing workshop. Rather, a series of weekly workshops, were you can bring in whatever your current project is and read the most recent portion of it. The rest of the group will then provide feedback. Alternately, the workshop could be the place where the actual writing occurs. I find that sometimes writing with another person in the room helps motivate me. Some of my best work has come out of nights where I’ve sat up with a friend drinking red wine and writing (and occasionally cracking the spine of one of my favourite authors for some inspiration).
This then, is a call to arms. If you’re interested in getting together for weekly workshops this summer (and possibly continuing into the fall and beyond), leave me a message or send me an email. Let me know what days and times would typically be good for you, as well as what format you’d like the workshops to take. Even if only one person wants to do this, I’ll still be up for it. It works better with more people, but I’m more than willing to hangout in a one-on-one setting and talk shop.
Personally, I’d like to meet in a pub, or an all-night diner (even if we aren’t there all night). This is partly because it would be an excuse to get out of the house, but also because those environments tend to stimulate the writer in me. Having said that, I’m up for meeting just about anywhere.
Once again, if you’re interested in getting together to workshop your writing, drop me a line.
