The Joy of Hot Dogs

The other day, I had a craving for hot dogs. But, not just any hot dogs. I wanted chili-cheese dogs. I hit the grocery store on the way home from work and picked up a can of chili. I’m not usually a fan of canned chili—I prefer to make my own—but for making chili dogs, canned stuff works perfectly, and takes far less time and effort than making chili from scratch.
As I sat down to eat my freshly made chili-cheese dogs, I got to thinking about what other types of hot dogs there are, and which ones are some of my favourites. That said, here is a brief list of some of my favourite hot dogs. Please feel free to add your own “recipes” in the comments.
- Chili-Cheese Dog: This one is pretty self-explanatory. Chili and cheese on a hot dog. Cook the dog (boil, microwave, or steam it), cook the chili. Add the chili to the hot dog and drop some grated cheddar on top of that. If the chili isn’t hot enough to melt the cheese, toss that bad boy under the broiler for a minute or two and it’ll melt down good (and give the bun a nice toasting).
- Pizza Dog: I’m not sure how common pizza dogs are. As a child, I was introduced to these by my parents, and find them to be a wonderful comfort food. However, when I mention the wonder of the pizza dog to friends, I often find myself having to explain what it is that I’m talking about. A pizza dog is simple to make. Cook the hot dog (boil, microwave, or steam it), add pizza sauce and grated mozzarella cheese. Put everything under the broiler until the cheese is melted and starting to turn golden brown. Best served with ripple chips and a cold glass of root beer.
- BBQ Hot Dog: Another pretty self-explanatory one, here. BBQ the hot dog, and garnish with your choice of condiments. I like mine loaded with sweet relish, mustard, and onions. I’ll occasionally toss some ketchup on as well. Sauerkraut is required if available.
- Chicago Dog: Chicago Dogs are best described on the Hot Dog Chicago Style website (via Michael Gravel). Apparently, I’ve never had a proper Chicago dog, though, because I don’t think I’ve ever had one with celery salt on it.

The “Pizza Dog” sounds awesome, I’ll have to try that sometime.
I’ve been having hot dog cravings for a while now, but ever since I moved I can’t find the ones I usually buy (only their “chicken version”)
Mike, Pizza Dogs are definitely quite awesome. I’ve heard that some people add slices of pepperoni to them, as well, which seems like a good idea to me.
Chicago dogs! Awesome! Long live the noble hot dog!
