Tuesday Evening Post

I’m tasting my coffee. I’m tasting my coffee, and I’m quite enjoying it. This is something relatively new to me, tasting my coffee. I’ve long enjoyed my coffee, but I sometimes think it may have had more to do with the positive effects of caffeine than with the flavour of the beans. For far too long, I drank run-of-the-mill percolator grinds. Maxwell House, Folgers, Nabob. These were the coffees I grew up with. There is nothing particularly wrong with these brands, but I no longer find them to be as enjoyable as I once did.
Though I do own a small, hotel room-sized coffee machine, I never use it. It sits in the cupboard, collecting a fine layer of dust. I started using a proper coffee press a few months ago, along with beans that I grind mere moments before I add the boiling water to the mix. The taste is superb. I rarely take coffee in the morning. With the exception of weekends, most of coffee drinking occurs at night. I take tea in the mornings. Coffee is no longer my early morning wakeup, it has become an after-dinner treat. Weekend mornings tend to begin with a coffee, but I think that’s acceptable. Weekend mornings are lazy. They’re relaxing. This is the way that coffee is meant to be taken: in a relaxing setting.
The obvious irony here is that caffeine is a stimulant. Be that as it may, it’s rather difficult to truly absorb and appreciate the taste of something when you’re in a rush to get out the door and on the road to the office. Hell, even my morning tea doesn’t touch my lips until I get to work. I steep in at home, yes, but I let it sit in the thermal mug, untouched until I’m at the office. As fast-paced as my job can sometimes be, the pace is a little more relaxed than the 7:25 dash out the door every morning.
I’m sitting, taking my coffee, and savouring the taste of my dark roast. It’s Kicking Horse 454 Horse Power. Organic, Fair Trade, and Canadian owned. I highly recommend it. And now, with the thick taste of coffee standing in my mouth, I’m off for a casual walk in the cold. Somehow, it just seems fitting.

“Kicking Horse” is my absolute favourite! The “Kick Ass” is incredible. And I love that they’re Canadian eh!!! And the French Press is the only way to go.
Add a healthy portion of cognac and it’s a good, full breakfast….
