When Did I Get Old?

I don’t know when it happened but, somewhere along the line, I became an old man. I’ve been watching Much Music’s Countdown for the past 45 minutes, and I’ve come to realize that I hate modern music. I think there have been a total of 3 songs that I actually liked in the last 45 minutes.

One was an ill Scarlett track, another was the new Foo Fighters single. The last one was the latest from Kanye West, but that has more to do with the fact that it’s a Daft Punk track, than it does with the fact that Kanye is ruining it by rapping over top of it.

If you consider the fact that the Foos have been making music since I was in junior high school, they don’t really count as “modern” music, since I’ve been listening to them for years, already. Hell, even the Kanye track doesn’t really count, since it’s really just the Daft Punk-supplied instrumental that I like, and Daft Punk has been around for longer than I’ve been listening to music with any degree of seriousness.

If it weren’t for “old” bands that I like still putting out new records, I might be stuck with the record collection that I currently have. Some people say it’s big enough, and that I should stop buying music. These people are wrong.

God, when did I get old? I’m not even 25 yet! I’m too young to be old!

Are you sure it’s not just more mainstream stuff you are uninterested in? Maybe you need to branch out and dig deep to find what you like ;)

That’s actually a good point, Mike. I have found a few less mainstream bands and artists in recent years that I really enjoy. Maybe I’m just not entertained by what’s popular in the mainstream these days.

Especially when it comes to hip hop, I’m really not interested in the mainstream. With rare exception, most of the rap groups/artists I listen to don’t get airplay on mainstream radio and/or music video channels.

Rock, I’m a little more open to the mainstream (mainly because the lyrics tend not to be as ignorant and vapid as mainstream rap lyrics tend to be), but I’m still not a huge fan of the emo, screamo, and pop-punk that’s so popular right now. What I wouldn’t give for a grunge revival… ;)
