Why I’m Not Buying a New Car

I’ve decided to put some more money into repairing the ol’ Acura, instead of saving for a new car. I think that my 20-year-old machine can survive at least one more winter, so I’m going to get new brake pads (and probably new tires) and a couple of other minor repairs, and see how much longer I can drive it.
There are two main reasons why I’m not buying a new car. The first is that, as much as I’d like to, I can’t justify the cost. The vehicle I drive right now is completely paid for. Other than gas, insurance, and the occasional repair, I have no car payments. I’ve got to say that I really enjoy not having to put down several hundred dollars on a car payment every month.
The second reason that I’m not buying a new car is that I’ve decided buying a new computer is a higher priority. If I’m going to take this freelance writing thing seriously, I’ll need a laptop. Instead of dropping a few grand a slightly newer old beater, I’ll put that money toward a good laptop.
If I’m going to be a writer, I need the right tools. The old PC I’m using now is slowly dying on me. By buying a laptop instead of a new desktop, I’ll be able to write from wherever I happen to be. If I want to write in a coffee shop, I’ll be able to. If I want to sit out on my balcony with a cold beer on a hot day, I’ll be able to do that as well. Part of the reason that I want to eventually be freelancing full time is the freedom that it provides. A laptop computer will mean that I’m not chained to my desk when I’m finally writing full time.
Either by choice or necessity, I will buy a new car eventually. In the meantime, the ol’ Acura will stay on the road, and I’ll continue to take mildly uncomfortable treks to the mountains for as long as she’ll get me there.

That’s what I like about my laptop, I can take it about the house to where ever I feel most happy about working. I could even go to a cafe to chill!
